Troposphere
All > Science > Climate Change
- The lowest part of the atmosphere from the surface to about 10 km in altitude in mid-latitudes (ranging from 9 km in high latitudes to 16 km in the tropics on average) where clouds and "weather" phenomena occur. In the troposphere temperatures generally decrease with height. See ozone precursors, stratosphere, atmosphere.
EPA - Cite This Source - This Definition - The lowest layer of the atmosphere and contains about 95 percent of the mass of air in the Earth's atmosphere. The troposphere extends from the Earth's surface up to about 10 to 15 kilometers. All weather processes take place in the troposphere. Ozone that is formed in the troposphere plays a significant role in both the greenhouse gas effect and urban smog. See ozone precursors, stratosphere, atmosphere.
EPA - Cite This Source - This Definition - Troposphere Lower part of the atmosphere, extending from the surface up to a height varying from about 7 to 9 km at polar regions to approximately 17 km in tropics. The troposphere is characterized by decreasing temperature with height, appreciable vertical wind motion, appreciable water vapor content, and weather.
