- Acids produced when the body breaks down fat or fuel. This occurs when there is not enough insulin to permit glucose to enter the cells and fuel them or when there are too many counterregulatory (stress) hormones appearing in the urine when the body does not have enough insulin. A moderate or large amount of ketones are a clear warning sign that diabetes is out of control (Ketonuria).
