- Two DNA molecules are complementary to one another when each successive base position from the 5' end in the first molecule is matched by the corresponding residue in the second, starting at the 3' end, according to the normal base pair rules (i.e. A for T, C for G). In the appropriate conditions, two complementary single-stranded DNA molecules will renature to form a double-stranded molecule. Complementary nucleotides are members of the pairs adenine-thymine, adenine-uracil, and guanine-cytosine that have the ability to hydrogen bond to one another.
