- Edible antigen-containing material, that activates the immune system via gut-associated lymphoid tissues. A preferred route for vaccine administration, particularly in areas where the technological infrastructure needed for maintenance of vaccines is absent. The vaccine is synthesized in vivo in the edible parts of transgenic plants (e.g. grains, tubers, fruits, etc.) or eggs.
