Food Biotechnology - The technique of removing, modifying, or adding genes to a DNA molecule to change the information it contains. By changing this information, genetic engineering changes the type or amount of proteins an organism is capable of producing, thus enabling it to make new substances or perform new functions.
USDA CSREES - Cite This Source - This Definition - Modifying genotype, and hence phenotype, by transgenesis.
UN Food and Agriculture Organization - Cite This Source - This Definition - The manipulation of an organism's genetic endowment by introducing or eliminating specific genes through modern molecular biology techniques. A broad definition of genetic engineering also includes selective breeding and other means of artificial selection.

Food Biotechnology - A linear map of the relative positions of genes along a chromosome. Distances are established by linkage analysis, which determines the frequency at which two gene loci become separated during chromosomal recombination. (See Mapping.)

Human Genome - A gene or other identifiable portion of DNA whose inheritance can be followed. See also: chromosome, DNA, gene, inherit
Human Genome Project - Cite This Source - This Definition - A segment of DNA with an identifiable physical location on a chromosome and whose inheritance can be followed. A marker can be a gene, or it can be some section of DNA with no known function. Because DNA segments that lie near each other on a chromosome tend to be inherited together, markers are often used as indirect ways of tracking the inheritance pattern of a gene that has not yet been identified, but whose approximate location is known.
