Permanence of Protection
Water
For the Marine Protected Areas Inventory, in order for sites to be considered for inclusion in the database, they must provide year round (12-month) protection. They must be established with an expectation of, or at least the potential for, permanence. Areas with a sunset clause must provide a minimum of four years of continuous protection and must have a specific mechanism to renew protection at the expiration of the sunset period.
