Speedy Trial Act

Federal law establishing time limits for carrying out major events, i.e. indictment, arraignment, etc., in a criminal prosecution.

A statute which imposes a series of time deadlines upon courts and prosecutors in criminal cases in order to ensure the defendant a speedy trial. Statement: During discovery, the defense is entitled to inspect and copy any relevant written or recorded statements made by the defendant which are in possession of the government. The substance of any oral statements made by the defendant to a government agent must also be disclosed.
