Equity
Real Estate
In housing markets, equity is the difference between the fair market value of the home and the outstanding balance on your mortgage plus any outstanding home equity loans. In vehicle leasing markets, equity is the positive difference between the trade-in or market value of your vehicle and the loan payoff amount.
The value in your home above the total amount of the liens against your home. If you owe $100,000 on your house but it is worth $130,000, you have $30,000 of equity.
The value of a property beyond any liens against it. Also referred to as owner's interest.
An owner's financial interest in a property; calculated by subtracting the amount still owed on the mortgage loon(s)from the fair market value of the property.
The market value of real property, less the amount of existing liens. Equity build-up is the reduction of principal on a mortgage or deed of trust by periodic payments, which increases (builds-up) the difference (equity) between the property value and amount of the lien.
Finance
Another word for "stock." It represents an ownership interest by shareholders in a corporation. In a margin account, equity is the difference between the value of your stock and the amount of money you have borrowed in that account.
Personal Finance
In the broadest sense, equity means ownership. If you own stock, you have equity in, or own a portion - however small - of the company that issued the stock.
Having equity is the opposite of owning a bond or commercial paper, which is a debt the company must repay to you.
Equity also means the difference between an asset's current market value - the amount it could be sold for - and any debt or claim against it. For example, if you own a home currently valued at $300,000 but still owe $200,000 on your mortgage, your equity in the home is $100,000.
The same is true if you own stock in a margin account. The stock may be worth $50,000 in the marketplace, but if you have a loan balance of $20,000 in your margin account because you financed the purchase, your equity in the stock is $30,000.

Poker
Your "rightful" share of a pot. If the pot contains \$80, and you have a 50% chance of winning it, you have \$40 equity in the pot. This term is somewhat fanciful since you will either win \$80 or \$0, but it gives you an idea of how much you can "expect" to win.
