ionizing radiation
Nuclear Physics
Radiation that is capable of producing ions either directly or indirectly.
- — Glossary of Nuclear Science Terms retrieved 2014-05-20
Radiation that converts the target totally or partially into ions on impact.
Cancer
(I-uh-NYZ-ing RAY-dee-AY-shun) A type of radiation made (or given off ) by x-ray procedures, radioactive substances, rays that enter the Earth's atmosphere from outer space, and other sources. At high doses, ionizing radiation increases chemical activity inside cells and can lead to health risks, including cancer.
Defense
Electromagnetic radiation (gamma rays, x-rays, extreme ultraviolet (EUV)) or particulate radiation (alpha particles, beta particles, neutrons, etc.) capable of producing ions, e.g., electrically charged particles, directly or indirectly, in its passage through matter. (Nuclear Radiation.)
