melting layer
Climate Change
The layer below the 0°C isotherm where snowflakes melt and turn into raindrops. When viewed by radar this layer appears as a band of enhanced reflectivity; thus it is commonly known as the "radar bright band." The microphysics of the melting layer of precipitation is an important feature for stratiform precipitation. The melting layer's degrading effect on satellite communication links makes understanding it important as well.
