Perl
The "value" returned to the parent "process" when one of its child processes dies. This value is placed in the special variable 0. Its upper eight bits are the exit status of the defunct process, and its lower eight bits identify the signal (if any) that the process died from. On Unix systems, this status value is the same as the status word returned by wait(2). See "system" in perlfunc.
