Mass Defect
Astrophysics
When two subatomic particles are bound together, their bound mass is slightly different than their mass if each particle is measured separately. The difference in these two masses is the mass defect. This is used to calculate the amount of energy released in a nuclear reaction, such as fusion or fission, using Einstein's ever so famous equation, Energy equals Mass times the Speed of Light squared.
