Presentence investigation and report
Criminal Law
Before sentencing, a probation officer investigates the defendant's background, financial condition, criminal offense(s), and criminal history. The probation officer incorporates the information revealed by this investigation in a presentence report. The report is prepared to assist the judge in deciding how to sentence the defendant. The investigation is sometimes referred to informally as the PSI (presentence investigation) or PSR (presentence report).
