serialization

The encoding of objects, and the objects reachable from them, into a stream of bytes and the complementary reconstruction of the object graph from the stream.

Putting a fancy "data structure" into linear order so that it can be stored as a "string" in a disk file or database or sent through a "pipe". Also called marshalling.
