byte
Java
In general computing, this refers to eight bits of data. In Java it is also the name of one of the primitive data types, who size is eight bits.
A sequence of eight bits. Java provides a corresponding byte type.
E-Discovery
Eight bits. A byte is a collection of bits used by computers to represent a character (i.e., "a", "1", or "&"). A "megabyte" is one million bytes or eight million bits or a "gigabyte" is one billion bytes or eight billion bits.
- 1 gigabyte = 1,000 megabytes
- 1 terabyte = 1,000 gigabytes
GIS
A memory and data storage unit composed of contiguous bits, usually eight. For example, file sizes are measured in bytes or megabytes (one million bytes). Bytes contain values of 0 to 255 and most often represent integer numbers or ASCII characters (e.g., a byte with an ASCII value of 77 represents a capital M). A collection of bytes (often 4 or 8 bytes) represents real numbers and integers larger than 255.

Perl
A piece of data worth eight bits in most places.
Storage
A unit of measurement of information storage, most oftenconsisting of eight bits. Eight bits of information can represent256 different states. In many computer architectures it is a unit ofmemory addressing.
Eight bits of information that can represent 256 different states, for example numbers, processor instructions, or a combination of letters and numbers as in ASCII code
