Java

Statements and declarations enclosed between a matching pair of curly brackets ({ and }). For instance, a class body is a block, as is a method body. A block encloses a nested scope level.

In the Java programming language, any code between matching braces. Example: { x = 1; }.

Renewable Energy

A repetition/replication of the Early, Mid and Late Seral Treatment plots and a Control plot. See Repetition/replication.

Defense

(1) A biennial increment of the Ballistic Missile Defense System that provides an integrated set of capabilities which has been rigorously tested as part of the BMDS Test-bed and assessed to adequately characterize its military utility. Once tested, elements and components are available for limited procurement, transition to production, or for emergency deployment as directed. These offramps may occur at any time during the Block Cycle to support timely execution of these transition or deployment decisions. The configuration for each Block is drawn from the following sources: • The prior BMDS Block; • BMDS elements, components, technologies, and concepts; • BMDS Battle Management, Command, Control, and Communications ( BMC2/C) specifications and products; • Externally managed systems, elements, or technologies (e.g., DSP, GCCS, MILSTAR, etc). Each successive Block provides increasing levels of capability to counter Ballistic Missiles of all ranges and complexity. (MDA Lexicon) (2) This term is used to designate a portion of a multi-message packet that is dedicated to a message contained within the packet.

Amazon Web Services

A data set. Amazon EMR breaks large amounts of data into subsets. Each subset is called a data block. Amazon EMR assigns an ID to each block and uses a hash table to keep track of block processing.

Perl

(block) What a "process" does when it has to wait for something: "My process blocked waiting for the disk." As an unrelated noun, it refers to a large chunk of data, of a size that the "operating system" likes to deal with (normally a power of two such as 512 or 8192). Typically refers to a chunk of data that's coming from or going to a disk file.

Technology

Security

Sequence of binary bits that comprise the input, output, State, and Round Key. The length of a sequence is the number of bits it contains. Blocks are also interpreted as arrays of bytes.

Technology

Telecommunications

A group of bits or digits that is transmitted as a unit and that may be encoded for error-control purposes. 2. A string of records, words, or characters, that for technical or logical purposes are treated as a unit. Note 1: Blocks (a) are separated by interblock gaps, (b) are delimited by an end-of-block signal, and (c) may contain one or more records. Note 2: A block is usually subjected to some type of block processing, such as multidimensional parity checking, associated with it. 3. In programming languages, a subdivision of a program that serves to group related statements, delimit routines, specify storage allocation, delineate the applicability of labels, or segment parts of the program for other purposes.

Travel

Tourism

A number of rooms, seats, or space reserved in advance, usually by wholesalers, tour operators, or receptive operators who intend to sell them as components of tour packages.
