Tagged Image File Format - a graphic file format used for storing still-image bitmaps. TIFFs are stored in tagged fields, and programs use the tags to accept or ignore fields, depending on the application.

TIFF or TIF ("Tagged Image File Format") is an electronic copy of a paper document in the form of an image, and as such contains no embedded text, fonts, images, or graphics (cf. PDF format). TIFFs are also compatible with a wide range of hardware and software platforms, and future development is not tied to any single company. TIFFs do not retain metadata from a source electronic document.
