hybrid arrested translation

A method used to identify what protein (s) are encoded by a particular cloned DNA sequence. A total mRNA preparation, which contains many different mRNA s, is hybridized with cloned DNA, so that those mRNA molecules homologous to the cloned DNA will anneal to give DNA /RNA heteroduplex es. The non-annealed mRNA molecules can be translated in vitro and this is then compared to translation products from the untreated mRNA s. See: hybrid released translation.
