A genetic method to test whether or not independent mutations are allelic. In a cross between the two mutant individuals, the genotype will be m1m2 if the mutations are allelic and m1 +/+ m2 if non-allelic. The phenotype of the former will be mutant, but that of the latter will be wild type (normal). Synonym: trans test.
