A long DNA sequence that is unin- terrupted by a stop codon and encodes part or all of a protein. (See Reading frame.)

(Abbreviation: ORF). A sequence of nucleotides in a DNA molecule that has the potential to encode a peptide or protein : comprisesa start triplet (ATG), followed by a series of triplets (each of which encodes an amino acid ), and ending with a stop codon (TAA, TAG or TGA). The term is generally applied to sequences of DNA fragments, for which no function has yet been determined. The number of ORFs provides an estimate of the number of genes transcribed from the DNA sequence.
