A group of fungal pathogens of many economic crop species, particularly cereals, where severe infestation leads to losses in both grain yield and quality. The latter can be a particularly serious problem as many of these fungi produce mycotoxins, some of which are dangerous to both livestock and human health (See: aflatoxin ). Specific strains are also employed on an industrial scale to produce protein for human consumption.
